Sam MacPherson

Meet Sam MacPherson, a 20 year old singer-songwriter from Red Bank, NJ. I caught up with him to get some insight on his musical past and what he plans for his future.

Sam grew up in a household that listened to the Stones and the Beatles. With a father and brother who are both musicians, he was inspired by them to get into music. They have had an influence on his music ever since. His dad, Jeffrey MacPherson, was a singer-songwriter and traveled around the world when he was an aspiring rockstar.

Sam grew up playing instruments, specifically the piano, but didn’t start to seriously play guitar and write songs until 2 or 3 years ago. When he first started writing music, John Mayer had an effect on his writing process. Recently he has also been inspired by Rex Orange County and Rayland Baxter, who are both very different from one another but he loves their work equally. Some of his other favorites are Sam Cooke, Stevie Wonder, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, and Black Keys.

He’s been touring around the last couple weeks, all leading up to the release of his new single, Something Simple, which is out in the world today. Something Simple is part of his debut EP, South of Red, which will be released in singles over the next month or two.

Something Simple has an easy going sound with Sam’s smooth and enticing vocals. The minimal instrumentation allows for his voice to really resonate and make you feel something. With guitar rifts and meaningful lyrics, you can hear every emotion in his work. Sam and his guitar paint a beautiful story and confirm that he is a poet in his work. Check it out below and give him a follow!

Sam sees himself in the next 10 years selling out Madison Square Garden with his best friends. An ambitious goal for a young musician, but with his promising career and natural talent there is no doubt that it will happen. Sam is true to his music and has pure talent, which rare in today’s world. Be willing to follow his journey and you won’t be disappointed.

Some of Sam’s other work is on Soundcloud and Would Have Been Nice (Acoustic) was released on Spotify back in September.

Fun Facts:

  • Sam’s middle name is August, so his initials are S.A.M, the same as his first name.
  • Favorite record of all time: Songs In The Key of Life by Stevie Wonder
